The National Rehabilitation Association’s
“Handbook of Rehabilitation Advocacy”

The lack of funding for appropriate services for persons with disabilities can be a very real obstacle, one that even the most determined, energetic, and caring family cannot overcome alone. The availability of funding and access to appropriate services for persons with disabilities falls squarely in the arena of public policy. Public policy begins with advocating at the grassroots level. Many voices become one. Associations are formed. Change occurs.

The National Rehabilitation Association (NRA) has been advocating for persons with disabilities for the last 80 years. The Association’s prominence and longevity is recognized by our national leaders and plays a vital role in shaping rehabilitation policy. The more than 8,700 members include therapists, rehabilitation counselors, job trainers, and professionals involved in advocacy of programs and services for people with disabilities. Membership is available to anyone.

The NRA name carries a great deal of weight in our state capitals and Congress. . . but their name alone cannot ensure the passage of positive and progressive rehabilitation policies. Therefore, the NRA has published the Handbook for Rehabilitation Advocacy to demystify policymaking and gives those that are not a member of the Association the power and tools to influence change.

Available for a small fee, the handbook will show you the basic tools for advocacy, including:
What motivates elected officials, what catches their attention, what makes them respond

The ins and outs of legislative process and how to use it to your advantage

Powerfully effective communication skills

How to frame key issues for lawmakers and package important information

How to access and use the media as a tool to advance your cause

Tips on accessing state lawmakers

Examples of successful advocacy efforts to help you plan your own
Changes in legislation require coordinated efforts. It necessitates becoming knowledgeable about the issues and making your voice heard. The voices of all people whose lives are affected by a disability need to be raised in unison. The Handbook for Rehabilitation Advocacy is an invaluable resource in this quest.
